SPORTS BETTING TERMS - BETTING GLOSSARY
Sports betting can be difficult when you don’t know the correct terminology. Bookies gambling terms are easy to follow once you’re aware of them, that’s why we’ve created this betting glossary. These betting terms can be used for all sports betting from horse racing to football. This glossary will cover everything from how to work out a Lucky 15 bet to more advanced terms such as a Union Jack bet. With this guide you should have all the information you need for the next time you call your bookie.
Win
Back a selection to win their event.
EW
So, what is an EW in betting? It’s simply when you back a selection to win or place. This consists of two bets, one win bet and one place bet. The odds for the place part of the bet are reduced in accordance with the place terms of the event and each event will have a set amount of places for each way.
Forecast
What is a Forecast bet? A Forecast bet consists of two selections in the same event and is made up of 1 bet. You must stipulate one selection to win and the other to come 2nd and they must finish 1st and 2nd in the selected order for a return.
Double
What does a double bet mean then? A double is a bet that consists of 2 selections in two different events. Both selections must win for a return. The return from the first selection is carried forward onto the 2nd selection. If one selection is non runner, then the bet turns into a single on the remaining selection.
Accumulator
What does accumulator mean in betting? An accumulator is a bet consisting of 4 or more selections taking part in different events. All must win for a return. If any selections do not run then bet reverts to an accumulator on the remaining. The returns from each selection carry onto the next selection.
Trixie
What’s a Trixie bet? A Trixie consists of 3 selections taking part in different events. A Trixie is made up of 4 bets. 3 x doubles and a treble.
Flag
A Flag consists of 4 selections taking part in different events. A flag is made up of 23 bets. A Yankee (11 bets) plus permed single stakes about (12 bets).
Lucky 31
What’s lucky 31 bet? A Lucky 31 is a full cover bet consisting of 5 different selections taking part in different events. A Lucky 31 is made of 31 bets – 5 x singles, 10 x doubles, 10 x trebles, 5 x 4fold accumulators and 1 x 5 fold accumulator.
Yankee
What’s a Yankee bet then? A Yankee consists of 4 selections taking part in different events. A Yankee is made up of 11 different bets. 6 x doubles, 4 x trebles and 1 x accumulator. A Yankee does not include single bets.
Heinz
What is a Heinz bet? A Heinz consists of 6 selections in different events. A Heinz is made of 57 bets. 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 x 4 fold accumulators, 6 x 5 fold accumulators and 1 x 6 fold accumulator.
Goliath
What is a Goliath bet? A Goliath consists of 8 selections in different events. A Goliath is made up 247 permed bets. 28 x doubles, 56 x trebles, 70 x 4folds, 56 x 5folds, 28 x 6folds, 8 x 7folds and 1 x 8fold acca.
Single
What does singles or a single mean in betting? A single bet is a bet that consists of one selection which must win its event.
Single Stakes About
What is a single stakes about bet? A single stakes about consists of two selections in different events. A single stakes about bet is made up of 2 singles bets with any returns from each single up to the original stake is used to place a further bet on the other selection.
Tricast
What is a Tricast bet? A Tricast bet consists of three selections in the same event and is made up 1 bet. You must stipulate a selection to finish 1st, one to finish 2nd and the other to finish 3rd and they must finish the event in that order for a return.
Treble
What does a treble mean in betting? A treble is a bet that consists of 3 selections taking part in different events. The return from the 1st selection is carried onto the second and then the return from the second selection is carried onto the third. All 3 selections must win for a return. If one selection is a non-runner then bet reverts to a double on the other two selections. If two selections are non runners then bet reverts to a single on the remaining selection.
Patent
What’s an example of a patent bet? A patent consists of 3 selections taking part in different events. A patent is made up of 7 different bets. 3 x singles, 3 x doubles and a treble.
Round Robin
What is the meaning of a Round Robin in betting? A Round robin consists of 3 selections taking part in different events. The bet is made of 10 bets. Trixie (4 bets) and permed single stakes about (6bets).
Lucky 15
How to work out a lucky 15 bet is simple. A lucky 15 is a full cover bet consisting of 4 different selections taking part in different events. A Lucky 15 is made of 15 bets – 4 x singles, 6 x doubles, 4 x trebles and 1 x 4fold accumulator.
Lucky 63
So then what is a lucky 63? A lucky 63 is a full cover bet consisting of 6 different selections in different events. A Lucky 63 is made up of 63 bets – 6 x singles, 15 x doubles, 20 x trebles, 15 x 4fold accumulators, 6 x 5fold accumulators and 1 x 6fold accumulator.
Super Yankee / Canadian
A Super Yankee bet or Canadian consists of 5 selections taking part in different events. These bets are made up of 26 bets. 10 x doubles, 10 x trebles, 5 x 4 fold accumulators and 1 x 5 fold accumulator.
Super Heinz
So then, what is a Super Heinz bet? A Super Heinz consists of 7 selections in different events. A Super Heinz is made up of 120 bets. 21 x doubles, 35 x trebles, 35 x 4 folds accas, 21 x 5 fold accas, 7 x 6 fold accas and 1 x 7 fold acca.
Union Jack
A Union Jack bet consists of 9 selections in different events which are numbered 1 to 9 and arranged in 3 rows of 3 selections. Bets are formed by combining the selections on each of the horizontal, diagonal and vertical lines.
