What is ‘Safe gambling’?

Gambling is a form of entertainment that you pay for. This means that you are handing over money for something which should be fun, and which will last for a finite length of time – like buying a cinema ticket.

The difference between gambling and any other form of entertainment is that you are playing games of chance for money. Now this could mean that you walk away with more money than you started with, or some other kind of prize – which is great.

But if you start with that as a goal, you will likely be disappointed time and again. If you were assured of a prize every time, you wouldn’t be gambling, you’d simply be purchasing a product or service. Chance is what makes gambling fun, but it is also what makes it a risk.

When we talk about responsible gambling we’re talking about being able to gamble without putting yourself or others at risk of harm. Part of gambling more safely and responsibly is understanding the odds of the game you are playing, what the rules are, and accepting that losing is just as much a part of gambling as winning.

To help you manage your gambling here are some safety tips and warning signs you should be aware of.

There is also information and help available to help you stay in control, or quit completely, if that is what you would prefer. If you would like information or need to talk through what’s on offer, you can contact GamCare or begambleaware for free and confidential information, advice and support:

Gambling Safely

Gambling is an enjoyable leisure activity if you gamble safely and stay in control. However, we know that for some people gambling can get out of control and can have adverse effects on them and the people around them.

Goodwin Racing Ltd is committed to Safe Gambling and helping people if they have a problem with gambling.

Gambling Advice

  • Mentally establish betting and loss limits before you start gambling, for example you can say to yourself;  “I’m not going to spend more than £50 this week”
  • Help enforce your mentally established limits by placing a deposit limit on your account.
  • See it as an activity to be done in your “leisure” time, don’t let it interfere with your work and responsibilities.
  • Don’t try to increase your income or pay off a debt with gambling.
  • Don’t gamble if you are under the influence of alcohol.
  • Be honest with your gambling, if you have to hide it from family or lie about it, that is not a good sign.
  • Never chase your losses.
  • Take regular breaks from gambling.

Gambling Harm

Whilst the vast majority of people enjoy gambling in a safe and responsible manner, for some people it can have a harmful impact.
Answering the following questions can help you understand more about your gambling:

  1. Have you ever bet more than you can afford?
  2. Have you needed to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling of excitement?
  3. Have you gone back on another day to try to win back money you have lost?
  4. Have you borrowed money or sold anything to gamble?
  5. Have you ever lied to cover up the amount of money or time you have spent gambling?
  6. Have people criticised your betting or told you that you had a gambling problem, whether or not you thought it was true?
  7. Have you felt guilty about the way you gamble or what happens when you gamble?
  8. Has your gambling caused you any health problems, including stress or anxiety?
  9. Has your gambling caused any financial problems for you or your household?

The more you answer “yes” to these questions, the more likely you are to have a gambling problem. If you have answered “yes” we recommend you speak to someone about your answers. Deposit Limits

A good way of managing your account is to place a deposit limit on your account. Limits can be set at whatever amount you like and can be set for 24 hour, 7 day or 30 day period. You can apply a deposit limit at any time and you can decrease limits at any time which will be applied immediately.
If you would like to increase any deposit limit applied, we urge you to consider carefully if it is the right thing to do. To give you time to think about your decision we will apply a minimum of 24 hour waiting period before any increases are applied. We may apply a 48 hour waiting period or longer to deposit limit increases.

Time Outs

If ever feel like you want to take a break from your gambling for whatever reason you can do so by applying a time out on your account. This can be for a period of 24 hours up to six months.
Once your time out begins you will not be able to use your account for betting. You may withdraw any balance in this time. You can not reverse a time out once it has started. Once your time out has ended your account will be automatically re-opened.
Please speak to customer services on 08000 421 321 or info@goodwinracing.co.uk.

Self Exclusion

If you feel that you may be developing or may have a gambling problem we strongly urge you to consider self-exclusion. If you want to stop gambling for any other reason please consider a time-out or account closure.
A Self-exclusion means that your account will be closed for a specified period of either 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or 5 years and it cannot be reversed. During this time you may withdraw any balance but no gambling will be allowed on your account all the time the self-exclusion is active. After your self exclusion ends you would need to contact us if you wanted to re-open and a 24-48 hour cooling off period will be applied before any deposits/bets can be placed.
If you decide to self-exclude we strongly recommend that you seek exclusion from any other gambling operators you have accounts with and seek advice from a gambling support service.
