About Tom Cannon
‘Top Cat‘ has been riding horses before he could walk. It was not long before he was enjoying huge success pony racing.
After taking all the major honours riding ponies he decided to look at a bigger challenge. The decision was made to put some obstacles in his way and so his natural progression led him to the show jumping arena. He soon became the one to beat and had huge success show jumping.
Not hanging around the teenager decided to combine both his skills from his pony racing days and show jumping and it wasn’t long before he started eventing.
This is where he really started to get a feel for horses jumping out of his hands and it wasn’t long before he decided to take the next big leap. This led him directly into the field of point to point racing.
Tom quickly established himself as a top rider winning the Champion Novice Point to Point Rider, Champion South East Point to Point rider and runner up in the Amateur Riders Title.
The transition to ‘Rules’ was the next step and on the 10th March 2010 ‘Top Cat‘ bagged his first winner on Days Of Pleasure for Chris Gordon at Fontwell Park.
At the still very tender age of 21 Tom steered his first big race winner to victory with On Trend winning at Sandown.
Other big race winners followed in the same season with Fairy Rath winning at Ascot and Haydock.
Look out Officer Dibble….’Top Cat’ has arrived !!!!
It wasn’t long before legendary trainer Chris Gordon was keen to secure his services on a more full time basis and Tom was given the job as stable jockey.
The winners inevitably followed with Tom winning multiple times on the profilic stable star Highway One O One and bagging a noticeable winner with Highway One O Two by taking the Dovecote Hurdle at Kempton.
This feat would later be repeated by Betgoodwin’s very own Aucunrisque also winning the Dovecote Hurdle with ‘Top Cat’ doing the steering !
The racing world had taken note of this talented young horseman ; none moreso than the shrewd Scottish supremo Alan King with the partnership becoming a regular occurance at racecourses all over the country.
On the 4th December 2021 the partnership provided Tom with his first Grade 1 winner aboard Edwardstone at Sandown.
Edwardstone has since won another 3 top races culminating in winning The Arkle on the 15th March 2022 at the Cheltenham Festival.
We firmly believe this is just the beginning for ‘Top Cat’ and Betgoodwin are delighted to have him as our brand ambassador.
